THE REAL DEAL?


Q: Josh, what's your background and what makes you qualified to help people lose weight?--Holly Davis

A: That's a GREAT question. You see, before you follow anyone's advice (about anything), you should know if they are the "real deal" or not.

Here's my story in a nutshell.

I have a double major in Biology and Nutrition from The Central University of Iowa and achieved my pre-med requirements. This means I literally spent years studying such topics as chemistry, anatomy, physiology, physics, nutrition, human metabolism, exercise, and more.

But instead of going to medical school, I became a research scientist for a company called EAS. The owner, Bill Phillips, is the author of the New York Times Best Selling book Body-for-LIFE. With Bill I had the opportunity to help design fitness programs for world-class pro athletes, top Hollywood actors, and men and women of all ages and backgrounds.

Over the years since I've left EAS, my fat-fighting approach has evolved with the discovery of new weight loss technology and new research. I've been able to help so many people achieve their ideal weight because I don't recommend a gimmicky quick-fix band-aid--I recommend a strategic weight loss plan for life.

WHAT IS THE SLIM BODY CHALLENGE?

CONFUSED ABOUT WEIGHT LOSS


Q: I've decided to join the Slim Body Coach Challenge, but I don't know much about how to follow a good eating and activity program. Where can I learn more?--Phil Patterson

A: Phil, the two articles, Eat and Get Slim and How to Start and Stick to a New Year's Exercise Plan in our Past Issues, on our Magazine page, are two GREAT places to start.

You can also learn a lot by surfing the weight loss forums and using the free weight loss tools on this website.

WEIGHT LOSS SCAM?


Q: Josh, is your Slim Body Coach Challenge some kind of scam? I mean, why are you giving away all this free stuff on your website and all these prizes to help us lose weight?--Martha White

A: Martha, I understand your skepticism, but my intentions are honorable and my answer is simple...

I know what it is like to be overweight. I know what it is like to have constant, uncontrollable cravings--to feed my emotions and hide from the world in a shell of fat. I know what it's like to look in the mirror and hardly recognize what I see looking back at me. To have others look down on me for not being "celebrity slim." And to feel hopeless about ever having a head-turning body I could be proud of.

I've been there... and done that. But thankfully I chose to take control of my life before it was too late. And now my mission is to help others do the same. (I strongly believe we all have a purpose in life, don't you?)

Another reason I am going above and beyond to help the good folks of this country become slimmer, happier, and healthier is because, like many people, I have lost dear loved ones to the deadly diseases caused by obesity.

Both of my grandfathers had heart disease. High cholesterol and blood pressure run rampant on both sides of my family (my cholesterol use to be 256)... and I can't think of an immediate family member who is anything close to slim and trim. We all have struggled with our weight. (My Great Grandfather was over 350 pounds.)

Make no mistake, I am worried sick about many of my friends and family members who are not following a healthy lifestyle. It's a shame that they have chosen to put themselves at great risk for not living a long and fulfilled life.

I'm also worried about this great nation. Every year over 300,000 people die from weight related diseases. And many more struggle with the other side effects of obesity--like low self-esteem, achy joints, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

This is why I'm putting up my own money, and giving away a tremendous amount of support and guidance, to motivate Americans to get slim, happy, and healthy. After all, I find the three go hand-in-hand, in hand!

CAN I REALLY WIN?


Q: Do people really win these types of weight loss challenges? I never hear about the winners!--Mike from New York

A: Mike, well, I can't answer for those other contests, but my weight loss contests are real and they're won by real people who are just like you! What's more, unlike those huge "shape up" contests that millions of people enter, my contests are small in number but BIG on heart. You've got a great chance of winning if you start and finish!

EAT LIKE CRAZY AND STILL LOSE WEIGHT?


Q: Your Slim Body Secrets eBook recommends that I eat five mini-meals a day, spread three hours apart. That seems like a lot. Wouldn't I make faster improvements if I skipped some meals?--Janice Lee

A: No, you wouldn't. Even though the concept may seem odd, it really is better to eat a meal every three hours as long as they are small meals--about two measuring cups worth consisting of both a protein a carbohydrate source--I'm not talking about all-you-can-eat buffets!

By the way, skipping meals leaves you feeling drained, hungry, and cranky. Plus it sends your body the message that it should slow down your metabolism to conserve calorie-burning (which means it holds on to fat stores).

On the other hand, frequent healthy eating has many benefits, such as: staving off cravings, stabilizing your blood sugar so you feel more energetic, keeping your metabolism cranked up so you burn more calories, and providing a constant fuel supply to feed your muscles--which burn more calories.

WHY CAN'T I STOP JUNK FOOD CRAVINGS?


Q: I can't stop overeating junk food. The cravings are too intense--especially at night when I'm watching T.V. I've already failed at my New Year's resolution and it's just the beginning of January! I feel desperate at 5'7, 280 lbs. I'm scared I'm going to die of a heart attack and I just want to look slim and attractive for once. Can you help?"--Marsha Wallace, AZ

A: Marsha, I know where you're coming from. I use to experience these same fears. Here are a few tips for you:

1.) Clean up your "toxic zone": This means removing all the "tempting" foods from your home that you can't stop overeating. As a man or women trying to lose fat, living in a house that is full of junk food is like a recovering alcoholic trying to live in a bar. It's bad news. You MUST replace the junk food in your house with healthy foods that feed your body and starve away the fat. These healthy foods include lean meats, low-fat dairy products, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and healthy oils. (Check out the article called Eat and Get Slim in this issue for more details.)

2.) Rearrange your time: Most of us have cravings that come on during certain times of the day. For many, it's in the evening, after dinner, when we're settling down and watching T.V. However, no matter when it is, the key is to do something else during this time when cravings are at their worst. Exercise, join a social group or charity, or go to bed early if you're a late night snacker. (This works well for me.) Spend time with your family playing games. The key is to replace the bad habit of overeating with a good habit that also makes you feel good. For me, exercise is the key. It makes me feel good and stops my cravings. 3.) Eat all the time: The biggest secret to losing fat is to eat ALL THE TIME. No kidding. By eating frequently your body burns more calories and keeps your metabolism running at maximum speed. Eat every three hours during the day by combining a portion of protein with a portion of carbohydrates. A portion of protein is about the size of your palm with a thickness of a deck of playing cards. A portion of carbohydrates is equal to the size of your clenched fist. I have all of my clients each three meals a day and two snacks following this pattern. Each meal should be no more than the size of two cups of food.

Here's an example of a day's meal plan:


• Meal One: A Β½ cup of cottage cheese and 3 pineapple

slices.

• Meal Two: One serving of Slim Body Matrix shakes

(which already combines the protein and carbs for you).

• Meal Three: A turkey sandwich and small side salad with

olive oil and fat free salad dressing.

• Meal Four: Another Slim Body Matrix Shake.

• Meal Five: Grilled chicken with spices, a small baked

potato, and a vegetable serving.


4.) Drink like a fish: Be sure to drink at least eight, 12 oz glasses of water each day for maximum fat-loss and to stop cravings. Many people think they feel hungry, when in fact, their body is really THIRSTY. If it's not time to eat and you're hungry, grab a big glass of pure, fresh water and the cravings will vanish.

5.) Stop drinking your calories: Most people don't realize it, but they are drinking a ton of calories during the day. Lattes, soft drinks, "fruit juices," (that don't contain real fruit juice), and sports drinks fill your body with useless calories. Plus, they can actually make your cravings worse because they contain a lot of sugar. You see, after you eat high-sugar foods your blood sugar levels rise quickly and then they plummet. This leaves you feeling even hungrier and makes cravings worse. Not good.

Take these tips to heart when trying to reduce your cravings. It will take a while for your body to adjust, but when it does, you'll be on your way to rapid fat-loss without cravings.
